My name is Marisa. I’m from Lebanon. My family decided to move to the United States of America, a place I’ve never seen but been told about many times.

I’m frustrated and lost at the moment, because we didn’t plan our moving to be so soon, it all happened so fast. I’m not sure what happened in my hometown, but I’ve never seen my parents so tense. I feel it was something horrible but they decided not to tell me about the plight that we were in. But now I look at their bright, smiley faces and feel at peace as we stand right here in the harbor.

I don’t really understand what to expect from a glorious country of such a grand scale that awaits us.

This morning my dad showed me a map so that I could understand where we’re going. At first I was flustered but his enlightening narrative made me really excited. I started imagining skyscrapers and shops that are there. But one thing caught my attention in a special way, it was when he told me about a splendid huge house that we could buy there. It felt like a magic dream even though I’ve never had such dreams before.

My parents were telling me on our way about the freedom of every person, equal opportunities that everyone can have, but it didn’t make any sense to me. Despite the difficulty of understanding such a fundamental concept as freedom, I felt it was something new I was soon to discover.

Though I understand that the society is completely different there, I’m eager to get to the United States of America as fast as we can and start a new life. I really hope it will make my parents happy.
